Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has questioned the government’s ability to curb kidnappings and other crimes, saying modern technology should make it possible to locate individuals and strengthen the fight against insecurity.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ARISE News on Thursday, Obi was asked how his administration would address kidnappings and ransom demands.

‘In today’s world, you can know where people are’

Obi said technological advances have given governments the ability to determine the whereabouts of individuals, raising questions about why such capabilities have not been sufficiently deployed to track criminals.

“In today’s world, you can know where people are,” he said.

The former Anambra governor further questioned the deployment of surveillance equipment, suggesting that resources allegedly used to monitor political opponents should instead be redirected towards fighting crime.

“Today, the government knows where I am. All those equipment’s they’re using to focus on opponents, should we focus on criminals?” Obi asked.

‘I’m going to focus it where it is’

Obi said his administration would not make the pursuit of political opponents a priority if he becomes president, insisting that security resources would be directed towards criminal activities.

“I’m not going to follow any opponents. I don’t care where they are. I don’t care what they do. It’s not my business. I’m going to focus it where it is,” he said.

‘There’s something wrong’

Obi also expressed concern over the frequency of kidnappings across the country, arguing that the continued attacks were difficult to reconcile with the technological capabilities available today.

“I don’t know who, but there’s something wrong. Not in today’s world. Because we’re serious. It’s happening to everybody. It’s happening every day. So, there’s something wrong,” he said.
