Godswill-Akpabio

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has threatened legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio if details of the ongoing investigation into alleged missing ₦200 trillion from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited are not made public.

In a March 21, 2026 letter signed by Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation urged the Senate to direct its Public Accounts Committee to disclose the identities and roles of all officials linked to the case.

SERAP also called for the publication of audit documents, financial records, and timelines for the investigation, as well as full proceedings including evidence and submissions.

“Transparency regarding the ongoing investigation would prevent any perception of a cover-up or political compromise, and ensure that the facts are clearly established,” the group said.

The Senate committee is investigating claims that ₦200 trillion is unaccounted for in NNPCL’s finances from 2017 to 2023, amid concerns over missing records and failure of some officials to appear before the panel.

SERAP warned that continued delays could erode public confidence and allow key evidence to be lost.

“Allowing these allegations to be ignored, delayed, or politicized risks normalizing impunity and diminishes the public’s right to know,” the letter stated.

The group gave the Senate seven days to act or face legal consequences, insisting that a transparent and timely conclusion of the probe is essential to ensure accountability and restore public trust.
