The United States has warned of a potential security threat to its facilities and affiliated schools in Nigeria.

In a statement issued Monday, the US State Department said the US Embassy in Abuja had alerted American citizens about a possible terrorist threat.

“The US embassy in Abuja informs US citizens of a possible terrorist threat against US facilities and US affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the notice said.

Americans in the country were urged to remain cautious and follow security measures to minimize risk.

“Increasing awareness of your surroundings, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with your family can help reduce your risk,” the statement added.

Authorities did not disclose the source or details of the suspected threat.

The warning comes at a time of heightened tensions globally. On Christmas Day, US President Donald Trump ordered bombing operations in Nigeria, saying the strikes were aimed at jihadist groups.

The move followed Trump’s assertion that Christians were being persecuted in Africa’s most populous nation, a claim disputed in Nigeria, where violence has affected both Christian and Muslim communities.

The security alert also follows a broader global warning issued by the United States after Washington and Israel carried out attacks on Iran, which has since responded with missile and drone strikes against US-aligned neighbours.
