Vitinha Calls for Ronaldo’s Return to Portugal Squad as Dispute With Jesus Continues
PSG midfielder Vitinha says Ronaldo’s return to Portugal is what the team wants after the forward’s disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus.
Portugal midfielder Vitinha is hoping Cristiano Ronaldo will rejoin the national team after his dispute with coach Jorge Jesus is resolved.
The Paris Saint-Germain star said an amicable settlement would be the best outcome, noting that Ronaldo’s return was the shared wish of the Portugal squad.
Vitinha made the comments during an interview with TNT Sports on Wednesday, following PSG’s 4-2 win over Manchester City. He described the latest international break as a period of intense emotions.
“It was a turbulent international break — full of high emotions,” Vitinha said.
“For my part, I just hope everything gets resolved for the best. I hope he [Ronaldo] returns and that everything turns out fine. The truth is, that’s what we all want. I hope he comes back and everything is sorted out.”
Ronaldo, 41, departed Portugal’s camp during the international break after a disagreement with Jesus over his playing time.
The Al Nassr striker subsequently issued an apology to his teammates through social media. However, he also accused Jesus of “breaking his word” to him.
The Portugal captain has maintained that he is prepared to accept any disciplinary measures handed down by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), while making clear that he intends to continue playing for his country.
The FPF has provisionally suspended Ronaldo, but the final outcome of the disciplinary process has not yet been announced. Information about the proceedings is expected to remain confidential until the investigation is concluded.
With 146 goals in 234 appearances, Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record goalscorer.
Meanwhile, Vitinha featured in each of Portugal’s four Nations League wins during the international break. The national team will next face Denmark and Wales in November.
