‘We Didn’t Win It’ — Hakimi Declines AFCON Title After CAF Ruling

Achraf Hakimi refuses AFCON 2025 title after CAF ruling, saying Morocco didn’t earn it and praising Senegal as deserved champions.

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has rejected the 2025 AFCON title awarded to his country, stating the team did not deserve it after losing the final to Senegal.

CAF, the continent’s football authority, ruled on March 17, 2026, that Senegal forfeited the match following a walk-off, converting Morocco’s 1–0 loss into a 3–0 win.

However, Hakimi dismissed the decision, urging his teammates in the Morocco national football team to do the same.

“My mum told me to reject the AFCON trophy. I’m officially rejecting it and hope my teammates do same. We had a chance but failed to win,” he said.

He acknowledged Senegal’s performance, insisting their victory should not be overshadowed.

“That’s football, sometimes you win and lose. Senegal beat us fairly and deserved it. It will be unfair to ruin their joy after the hardwork.”

While expressing respect for the Confederation of African Football, Hakimi maintained his refusal.

“I respect the CAF decision but I’m officially rejecting the trophy. I didn’t win 2025 AFCON. Congratulations to Senegal once again.”

The development has sparked debate across football, as Morocco were considered strong contenders, but the Senegal national football team were widely regarded as rightful winners based on their performance. Senegal’s football federation has since confirmed it will appeal the verdict at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
