Dele Momodu, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has expressed confidence that the opposition knows how to prevent President Bola Tinubu from winning re-election in 2027, saying efforts to challenge the President are already underway behind the scenes.

Momodu disclosed this on Wednesday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he declined to reveal the ADC’s strategy for the forthcoming presidential election.

The publisher of Ovation Magazine said the party would keep its plans confidential while working towards its objective of denying Tinubu a second term.

“I can’t tell you about strategy in public. What we know is that once upon a time, Tinubu fought for himself to survive the second term as governor of Lagos State. So others are also working very hard behind the scenes,” Momodu said.

He added: “We are not going to come in public and say this, but we know what to do to make sure that he does not get that second term.”

ADC chieftain expresses doubts over 2027 election

Beyond the opposition’s political strategy, Momodu questioned the independence and credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under Tinubu’s administration.

He alleged that the President had appointed an excessive number of people from the South-West to the electoral body, raising concerns about whether the commission would conduct a credible election in 2027.

Momodu further claimed that public confidence in Tinubu’s ability to guarantee a free and fair election was low, extending even to some of the President’s own supporters.

“If you ask an average Nigerian today about Tinubu, do you trust Tinubu to conduct a free and fair election? I can tell you, 90 per cent of them will say no,” he said.

“Nobody trusts Tinubu to run a free and fair election, including his own supporters,” Momodu added.

He also challenged suggestions that Tinubu would refuse to accept an electoral defeat, arguing that the determination of ordinary Nigerians could prove decisive in the next election.

“Look, you do not know the determination of Nigerians, and now I’m not resting my confidence on just my party. I’m talking about the ordinary man on the street who cannot imagine Tinubu coming back again,” he said.

Momodu alleges fear among political office holders

The ADC chieftain also accused the President of wielding excessive influence over elected and appointed officials, alleging that fear had discouraged governors, judges and legislators from openly challenging him.

Momodu claimed that some individuals who publicly supported Tinubu might privately hope for his defeat because of concerns about the President’s dominance in the political system.

“Governors are scared, judges are scared, legislators are scared. So, Tinubu has become a god that nobody is ready to face and say, ‘Oga, you’ve done your best. Please go home,’” he said.

His remarks come amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 general election, as opposition parties work to consolidate their positions and prepare to challenge the incumbent President’s re-election bid.
