With the elevation of Professor Nentawe Yilwatda to the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management is now vacant. As discussions begin on who should take over, we must move away from politics-as-usual and focus on choosing someone with heart, experience, and genuine compassion. In that regard, Hajiya Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu stands out as the perfect fit.

As former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Ramatu proved herself to be a tireless champion of the poor and vulnerable. She didn’t just hold office, she used it to make a real difference. From widows and orphans to displaced families and persons living with disabilities, her programs reached those who needed help the most. Her efforts touched lives in all six area councils of the FCT, where she empowered thousands with food, training, and support.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was a lifeline to many. She ensured families had food on their tables and essential supplies when the world stood still. She built temporary shelters for the displaced, supported rural communities, and always made sure no one was left behind. It’s no surprise many Nigerians nicknamed her “the People’s Minister.”

But what makes Dr. Ramatu truly special is that she didn’t stop when she left office. Unlike many others, her humanitarian work continues, quietly, consistently. Through her personal foundation and other partnerships, she still supports schools, donates to the needy, and offers health and food support to those in crisis. She doesn’t need a title to serve, and that’s what makes her the right person for the title.

In a country where public service is often about self-interest, Dr. Ramatu is different. She is a bridge between government and the grassroots, a leader who listens, and a woman whose compassion guides her every step. Her PhD and rich experience give her the skills; her heart gives her the purpose.

Nigeria faces increasing disasters, floods, displacement, hunger. We don’t just need a minister who understands policies; we need one who understands people. Dr. Ramatu fits that role better than anyone.

Mr. President, the choice is clear: Appoint someone who is already doing the work. Someone who leads with kindness and serves with action.
