2027 Presidency: Kwankwaso Rejects Calls to Step Down for ADC
NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso dismisses claims he may step down for the ADC candidate ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
ABUJA — Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared that he will not withdraw from the 2027 presidential contest in favour of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), arguing that the party does not present a better alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The declaration comes as opposition parties intensify political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Kwankwaso accused the ADC Presidential Campaign Council of spreading claims that his ticket with Peter Obi was working for the APC or would eventually step aside for the ADC’s presidential candidate.
He faulted the campaign council for allegedly focusing on attacking him, Obi and the NDC rather than persuading Nigerians to support its own candidate.
“We will not withdraw our candidature for the ADC or any other party,” Kwankwaso said.
He maintained that the NDC ticket, referred to in his statement as the “OK ticket,” had no alliance with the ruling party and was determined to remain in the presidential race.
“The OK ticket is neither working for nor acting on behalf of the APC or any of its candidates. We see no possibility or reason to withdraw from the presidential race in favour of the ADC candidate or any other,” he stated.
The former Kano governor also called on the ADC campaign council to respond to allegations raised by Vice-President Kashim Shettima against its presidential candidate, rather than concentrate on criticising the NDC ticket.
Kwankwaso questioned the ADC’s position as an alternative to the APC-led government, accusing the ruling administration of failing to meet Nigerians’ expectations.
“The APC-led government has failed Nigerians. The ADC offers no better alternative,” he said.
He argued that the NDC ticket with Obi was better positioned to provide effective opposition and address the country’s pressing challenges, citing its claimed credibility, capacity and nationwide support.
According to Kwankwaso, the ticket would prioritise national unity and work towards addressing insecurity, improving education, strengthening agriculture, developing infrastructure, enhancing healthcare and resolving economic challenges.
He appealed to supporters and Nigerians who shared the party’s vision to remain committed to its electoral ambitions ahead of the 2027 polls.
Describing the NDC as the country’s most formidable opposition party, he urged supporters to continue mobilising for its success.
“I therefore urge all our supporters and well-meaning Nigerians to continue working toward the victory of our great party,” he said.
