2027: Wike says he controls political structures in Rivers, FCT
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike vows to deliver Rivers State and Abuja for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, declaring his continued political influence.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his political influence in Rivers State and Abuja, saying he does not need to occupy the office of governor to remain in control of political structures.
Wike spoke on Wednesday during a media chat in Abuja, where he addressed questions surrounding his continued influence in Rivers State and his frequent trips to the Niger Delta.
The former Rivers governor rejected the notion that political supremacy in a state is tied to holding a formal executive position.
Instead, he described his political influence as being sustained by a grassroots network that remains active regardless of who occupies an elected office.
Wike said he remains responsible for directing the political machinery in both Rivers State and the FCT, despite developments in the political landscape of his home state.
“You don’t need to be a governor before you’ll be in charge. I am the General Commander of the Political Infantry here. So also in the FCT,” he declared.
The FCT minister further said he had a responsibility to secure strong electoral support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in both territories during the 2027 general elections.
“I owe the President to give these two as far as the election is concerned,” Wike said.
He also defended his regular visits to Rivers State, saying they should not be interpreted as an abandonment of his duties as FCT minister or an indication that he intends to leave Abuja.
According to Wike, political leadership requires personal interaction with grassroots supporters and political allies, making it necessary for him to maintain a physical presence in Rivers State.
He said political leaders who depend entirely on reports from others while remaining in their offices risk making wrong decisions because they may not have an accurate understanding of developments on the ground.
Wike added that his direct engagement with his political associates allows him to monitor developments, communicate strategic decisions and ensure that political plans are carried out effectively.
