After 12 years of providing ride-hailing services in Nigeria, Uber is winding down its operations in the country effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The company disclosed the development in an email sent to users, saying the decision was reached following a “thorough review” of its business in Nigeria.

Uber entered the Nigerian market in 2014 with its launch in Lagos, later establishing itself as a major player in the country’s growing ride-hailing industry by connecting passengers with independent drivers.

Announcing its departure, Uber told customers: “After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026.”

The company thanked Nigerians for choosing its platform over the years and reflected on the role its services played in the daily lives of users.

“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers,” Uber said.

Uber also recognised that ending its service could affect the routines of its customers and offered an apology.

“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” the company said.

The decision brings to an end Uber’s 12-year run in Nigeria and marks a significant shift in the country’s competitive ride-hailing market.

The company said users who have outstanding account-related enquiries should contact Uber before September 23, 2026, the deadline it provided for final enquiries as it completes the process of exiting Nigeria.
