Deforestation of Oil Palm Plantations in Relation to the EUDR (Europion Union Deforestion Regulation) -By Muhammad Adam Alimulloh

The EUDR system can promote new innovations in the form of product traceability, which is very necessary, especially in export and import activities. This innovation can protect products and maintain the quality of products to be exported overseas. It can also increase customer confidence in the quality of the products we provide so that customers will continue to order and can also buy them at high prices due to the quality of the products and the advantages of this innovation in handling problems quickly and promptly if there is an error with the product.

Forest

In this current area in Indonesia presiden prabowo has a planning that will expand about palm oil plantations in all regions in Indonesia. But in the oder hand , our president  alwayas ignore about the deforestation. Deforestation is conversation land that use to forest into the land that will used for business. So when we linked to the natural conditions in Indonesia, where natural disaster often converted into the business fileds. This is what triggers natural disasters, so in Indonesia when it will be really deforestation with a large scale that changes natural disaster into the land of business, there won’t have a strong natural disaster at the forest. Because structural of oil palms trees it is different with a tress that grows at the forest naturally. The root structure of oil palms trees is fibrous root and the tree that grows naturally have a tap root, just looking from the structure it is different. And there are other things too, oil palms tree can’t be change the function of forst in Indonesia , because of  water absorption capacity and water storage capacity.

In the order country at Union Euroupea that use a regulation of EUDR ( Europion Union Deforestion Regulation) which in this regulations will reduce about deforestation or won’t receive a products that planted and produced from the land that has experienced loss of function or deforestation anad also reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions. There have a lot of county that use this regulations. If Indonesian want to use this regulation EUDR , the presiendent have to register about forest cover camp, because if export is held the product form Indonesian will be accepted and not rejected, because this product is a product that is palnted and produced from  land that  is not deforested. Especiallu in this case, palm oil will happen a large scale of deforestation.

But when we apply this regulation of EUDR that was created by Union Euroupea, we have a lot of challenges for Indonesian farmers. Especially Indonesian farmers that lives in village in indoneisa, farmers are always left behind regarding about a information on the internet, so the goeverment need to conduct a socialization  to the farmes that live in village. Escepcially the farmers who plants a palm oil , coffee and cocoa. Because that product is a popular procuct in import or export commodities. So the challenges will be faced by the farmers, it is apply about land mapping system used ad land for palnting their products. If it doesn’t do this system or no have a mapping data the products will be rejected and eliminated because there isn’t mapping data. In addition, this mapping function is so that when carrying out imports and exports ot the coordinate poinys for planting these produts don’t pass through or use forest land. Because in Indonesia the land of agricultural is often intermingled with forest, shurbs and vacant land.

On the other hand, in terms of certification, it is also necessary for palm oil companies to register the certification of the land so that it becomes palm oil plantation land, but before that, it must also be investigated whether the land is deforested land or land that is used for the purpose of planting palm oil trees. The certification can be in the form of RSPO or ISPO, which is used as a sign of transparency regarding the land.

In addition, the use of EUDR offers considerable opportunities, as products to be exported can have a clear traceability of their origin, due to certification and land mapping for the cultivation of these crops. The branding of products to be exported will also increase their price significantly, as countries that adopt anti-deforestation systems or policies will certainly pay very high prices. Furthermore, with the use of the EUDR system and ISPO certification, Indonesia can have strong access to the European market, regardless of how strict the regulations are. Therefore, Indonesia must also strive for ISPO to be formally recognised in the EUDR regulations.
