Edo LG poll: Okpebholo applauds voter participation, says election peaceful

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has commended residents for the impressive turnout recorded during Saturday’s local government election, saying it reflects the people’s commitment to grassroots governance.

Election observers accredited for the exercise equally noted that voting had remained peaceful and orderly across the state.

Speaking after voting at Ward 2, Udomi Primary School in Esan Central Local Government Area, the governor said the election got underway on schedule with electoral officials and security personnel present.

Okpebholo arrived at the polling unit at about 10:24 a.m. and waited in line with other voters before casting his ballot at approximately 10:40 a.m. He later met with stakeholders before briefing journalists.

According to the governor, feedback from different parts of Edo suggested that the election was progressing without major incidents.

“This election is very peaceful and it is going smoothly based on the feedback we are getting from the field,” he said.

“The turnout is very high. This is a demonstration of grassroots democracy. It shows that our people are interested in choosing those who will administer the affairs of their local governments.

“By the grace of God, a winner will emerge at the end of today’s election.”

He also appealed to residents to maintain peace until the conclusion of the exercise and await the official results to be announced by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).
