FCT Minister Assures Indigenous Residents of Land Titles
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike pledges Certificates of Occupancy for ancestral lands, urges recognition of local communities, and highlights infrastructure projects like Saburi Road as part of the administration’s “Renewed Hope” programme.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has promised to grant Certificates of Occupancy (Cs of O) to indigenous communities in the FCT as part of efforts to address long-standing land disputes.
Speaking at Apo during a visit to the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Wike said the government under President Bola Tinubu is committed to delivering practical solutions rather than empty assurances.
He acknowledged the emotional and economic impact of land displacement on original inhabitants and pledged decisive action.
“I know how land is. I will make sure I do everything possible for you to be having Cs of O too. I know how painful it is because I am also from somewhere. We are not saying ‘when we come, we will do this.’ We are here now and ready to do this,” he said.
According to the minister, governance in Abuja must evolve to ensure local communities receive proper recognition.
“We must change the pattern of politics in Abuja. We must recognize that anywhere you go to, there are people there… we must give that recognition,” he noted.
Wike warned residents to be cautious of politicians who only engage rural communities when seeking office.
“Be careful of emergency human rights activists. Be careful of emergency democrats… Now, because he wants your support, he has become an emergency corn chewer. Will you allow that?” he asked.
Pointing to infrastructure projects such as the Saburi Road, Wike underscored the importance of mutual commitment between leaders and the people.
“Relationship must not be one-sided. You do for me, I do for you… When you have done your own, I should not give you excuse. I must do my own,” he said.
He further charged Chairman-elect Christopher Zakka Maikalangu to remain close to the grassroots, reiterating that the FCT Administration is determined to ensure the “Renewed Hope” programme reaches every community.
