Judge Timothy Kelly orders the Trump administration to reinstate press access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico after their reporters were barred.
A federal judge in the United States has ordered the Trump administration to immediately reinstate White House access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico after journalists working for the outlets were denied entry to the premises.
US District Judge Timothy Kelly issued the order on Thursday, ruling that the administration’s decision to revoke the reporters’ press credentials likely failed to meet constitutional due process requirements.
Kelly ordered the government to return the outlets’ press passes and temporarily blocked enforcement of the ban for 14 days. The order came after the three media organisations challenged the administration’s decision in court.
In his ruling, Kelly said the journalists were not provided with advance notice or an opportunity to contest the decision before their credentials were withdrawn.
The judge found that the revocation of press passes “likely violated their constitutional due process rights”.
The media organisations had argued that the ban infringed on their First Amendment rights and due process protections. The Trump administration has defended the restrictions, arguing that White House access is a privilege rather than an entitlement and citing national security concerns.
