Liverpool at Risk: Danny Murphy Says Failure to Overcome Galatasaray Would Be Catastrophic for Arne Slot
Danny Murphy cautions Liverpool that exiting the Champions League to Galatasaray would seriously damage Arne Slot’s position and the club’s European hopes.
Liverpool legend and former midfielder Danny Murphy has warned that tonight’s Champions League clash with Galatasaray could be a defining moment for manager Arne Slot.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy described the Round of 16 second-leg tie as pivotal. With Galatasaray leading 1-0 from last week’s match in Turkey thanks to Mario Lemina’s early goal, Murphy said failure to advance could mark the end of Liverpool’s European ambitions and significantly weaken Slot’s authority.
“If they were to not go through against Galatasaray tonight, it would be a catastrophe for him. There’s no comeback. I think that would be… the end of the season. I really believe that,” Murphy said.
Murphy emphasized that Slot should not face immediate dismissal, but underlined the mounting pressure stemming from underperforming signings and a lack of complete influence over the squad despite heavy transfer spending.
He further warned of wider consequences if Liverpool miss out on European qualification:
“This is his team and this defence of the Premier League and potential loss of an opportunity in Europe… If that happens, then I wouldn’t be surprised in the current climate if they look at it and go, ‘what’s around is something better.’ Time for a change.”
While Murphy ruled out immediate panic over Slot’s job, he highlighted Xabi Alonso as a potential replacement:
“If they’re going to do it in the summer, why not do it now? And let him see what he’s got. Alonso is the one the fans want… I think Liverpool will go for him.”
Murphy added that Alonso is not the only solution, but his availability and fan support make him a likely candidate should Liverpool decide to change direction after tonight’s outcome.
