Gunmen suspected to be about six in number abducted four cocoa farmers on Wednesday at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria in Idi-Ayunre, Ibadan.

It was learnt that some of the victims had come to the institute for a familiarisation visit when the attackers struck.

A survivor, who managed to escape, said the gunmen emerged from the bush and stopped their vehicle while they were on their way to the Nursing Section of the facility.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, noting that one of the victims had been rescued and his vehicle recovered.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, had ordered the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and other tactical teams to reinforce security in the area.

Olayinka added that operatives are currently conducting extensive bush combing operations, while the rescued victim is in safe custody and being debriefed.

“Efforts are on to rescue the remaining victims and arrest the perpetrators,” he said.

Police say operations are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining abducted farmers.
