Man Utd Face Growing Turmoil as Man City Case Puts Premier League in Limbo
Man Utd struggle through their worst league start in 40 years, Man City await a ruling on financial charges, and Brighton prepare for their clash with Crystal Palace.
Manchester United travel to Leeds United on Sunday under increasing pressure to revive their struggling campaign, while Manchester City seek a seventh consecutive league victory amid ongoing uncertainty over their financial case.
Brighton could benefit significantly if Manchester City receive severe punishment over alleged financial rule breaches. The Seagulls are only two points behind second-placed Arsenal and will face Crystal Palace in a fiercely contested derby this weekend.
AFP Sport highlights the major storylines ahead of the latest round of Premier League action.
Carrick under pressure as Man Utd struggle
Manchester United’s poor start to the season has become their worst league opening in 40 years, with tensions rising further following Lisandro Martinez’s criticism of the club’s hierarchy.
The defender spoke out after United’s 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, questioning the level of investment in the squad and directing criticism at technical director Jason Wilcox. United brought in only three midfielders during the transfer window.
Martinez has also been criticised for his involvement in goals conceded against Fulham and Tottenham in recent weeks.
The Red Devils have recorded just one victory in their first six Premier League games and suffered an early League Cup exit against Brighton last month.
Their trip to Leeds presents another difficult test for Carrick, whose position is increasingly under scrutiny as Manchester United continue to struggle to recover from the decline that followed Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Leeds have not defeated United at Elland Road since 2002, although they beat Carrick’s side at home in April last season, inflicting the only home loss of his interim tenure.
Carrick, however, remains optimistic that the rivalry match can help his team regain momentum.
“What a great game (on) Sunday to prepare for. It’s a fantastic game for us, for the club, for the history, for the supporters,” he said.
“Everything to do with the game is a great game so we’ll be ready for that.”
Man City’s unbeaten run overshadowed by charges
Manchester City have made a perfect start to their league campaign, winning all six matches to lead the table. Yet the club’s position could be affected by the outcome of their effort to overturn a guilty verdict involving more than 100 alleged breaches of Premier League regulations.
City responded to the scrutiny with a commanding 3-0 win away to Liverpool last weekend. They then showed resilience in the second half of their Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, although they eventually lost 4-2.
The long-running case continues to create uncertainty across English football.
City have denied wrongdoing, and the proceedings—which began eight years ago—are expected to take several more months before an appeal is heard and a possible punishment is determined.
Former England manager Gareth Southgate believes the situation has damaged the wider game.
“My underlying thought is none of this is good for football and there are no winners,” he said.
City have the chance to move six points clear at the top when Ipswich visit the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Arsenal will play a day later, away to Nottingham Forest.
Brighton aim to become more ruthless against Palace
Brighton are looking to take advantage of the difficulties facing several of the Premier League’s established clubs as they pursue a possible place in the Champions League.
The Seagulls have already beaten Arsenal 3-0 this season, handing the Gunners their only defeat so far.
Their rise from the lower divisions into European competition has been driven partly by owner Tony Bloom’s use of data analytics and the club’s ability to identify talented players and coaches.
Brighton have continued to compete despite selling key players to wealthier clubs, but they have yet to appear in the Champions League.
Manager Fabian Hurzeler now wants his side to show greater aggression and determination when they host rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday.
“We want to be ruthless. We want to create this energetic atmosphere where it makes it so hard to come to this place,” Hurzeler said.
“We have to keep building this together with our fans and not be the nice football club anymore.”
