Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signalling a potential move back to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His resignation followed days of political consultations, with APC posters recently seen at his Mundubawa Avenue residence in Kano sparking speculation about his next move.

In a letter dated April 19, addressed to PDP officials in Giginyu Ward and copied to state and local party leadership, Shekarau confirmed his exit.

“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party with effect from today,” he stated.

He explained that the decision was collectively taken after discussions with his political allies.

“This decision follows wide and extensive deliberations within my political group to pursue our political career in a different political party,” he said.

Shekarau thanked party members and wished them success in their duties.

His resignation follows an open invitation from APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, who had urged him and other PDP figures to join the ruling party.

A former governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011 under the ANPP, Shekarau has remained a prominent figure in Nigerian politics across different party platforms.

His departure adds to ongoing defections weakening the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
