‘The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak’: Peter Obi rejects viral letter to Onitsha monarch

Peter Obi has distanced himself from a viral letter purportedly written to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, describing the document as fake and its signature as forged.

Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), issued the denial on Saturday, September 19, amid a renewed dispute over Anambra State’s finances and claims concerning his administration as governor.

The letter, dated September 19, 2026, carried the title “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak” and purportedly addressed political and financial issues involving Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Obi’s administration.

Among other things, the writer called for greater transparency over Anambra’s financial records, stating: “Let the records be opened. Let the books be examined. Let every legitimate question be answered with evidence.”

The document emerged as Obi and the Anambra State Government continued to disagree over the financial obligations allegedly inherited from his tenure.

Obi has disputed claims that he left unpaid loans and has maintained that his administration did not leave outstanding salaries, pensions or obligations to contractors for completed projects.

The state government has presented a different account, saying eight external loan facilities contracted during Obi’s administration were still outstanding when he handed over power on March 17, 2014. It said the outstanding balance had reached N127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026, citing figures attributed to the Debt Management Office.

Obi, however, said the viral correspondence did not come from him.

“My attention has been drawn to a fake letter circulating on social media, purportedly written by me to His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, concerning political and financial matters in Anambra State,” he wrote.

He described the publication as an attempt to mislead the public.

“This document is entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public. Furthermore, the signature appended to the letter is completely forged.”

Obi subsequently urged Nigerians and media organisations not to give the document credence.

“I urge the public and media to disregard this spurious publication. My focus remains steadfastly on issues of national development, accountability, and building a better future for our people – never on cheap fabrications.”

Reports published after Obi’s statement confirmed that he had publicly disowned the letter and rejected both its contents and the signature attributed to him.
