Artificial Intelligence In Nigerian Universities: Opportunity Or Academic Threat -By Hajja Kaka Faradin

Artificial intelligence is neither the saviour of education nor its greatest threat. Like every powerful innovation, its impact depends on how it is used. If guided by strong ethical standards and effective policies, AI can transform Nigerian universities into centres of innovation and digital excellence. But if abused, it risks eroding the very skills that higher education is meant to cultivate.

Technology - Artificial Intelligence

Just a few years ago, students spent hours searching through textbooks and library shelves for answers. Today, many simply open an AI-powered chatbot, type a question, and receive an explanation within seconds. In lecture halls and hostels across Nigerian universities, artificial intelligence (AI) is quietly transforming the way students learn, research, and complete assignments. Yet, as the technology becomes more common, it raises an important question: Is AI empowering education or weakening it?

For many students, AI has become more than a digital tool—it is a personal learning assistant. Faced with overcrowded classrooms, limited academic resources, and insufficient access to lecturers, many students use AI to explain difficult concepts, improve their writing, generate research ideas, organise assignments, and prepare for examinations. Rather than replacing learning, many say it helps them understand their coursework more effectively and study with greater confidence.

The growing popularity of AI has been driven by Nigeria’s expanding digital landscape. According to the Digital 2025 Nigeria Report by DataReportal, Nigeria had approximately 107 million internet users at the beginning of 2025, representing 45.4 percent of the population. Although internet access remains uneven, increasing connectivity has made AI-powered learning tools more accessible to university students, changing how knowledge is acquired inside and outside the classroom.

The opportunities extend beyond students. For lecturers and researchers, AI can simplify lesson preparation, analyse large volumes of data, review academic literature, and reduce time spent on routine administrative tasks. It also has the potential to improve access to education by providing students in underserved communities with instant learning support and educational resources.

However, the rapid rise of AI has also sparked concerns. Some students misuse the technology by submitting AI-generated assignments as their own, raising serious questions about academic integrity and originality. AI systems can also produce inaccurate information, outdated facts, or fabricated references, making it essential for users to verify every output. These challenges have prompted universities around the world to redesign assessments, placing greater emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, and practical problem-solving.

Rather than resisting AI, Nigerian universities should embrace it with responsibility. Institutions need clear policies on the ethical use of AI, while lecturers should design assessments that encourage independent thinking instead of memorisation. At the same time, students must recognise that AI is most valuable as a guide to learning—not a substitute for genuine understanding.

The future of learning will not be shaped by artificial intelligence alone, but by the wisdom with which universities, lecturers, and students choose to use it.
