‘Avoid Escalation’: Macron Urges Restraint as Iraq Faces Rising Regional Tensions
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for urgent efforts to prevent Iraq from being pulled deeper into the escalating Middle East crisis.
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for urgent efforts to keep Iraq out of the widening Middle East conflict.
Speaking after a phone call with Nechirvan Barzani, Macron warned that the situation is becoming increasingly volatile.
“Everything must be done to avoid Iraq being drawn into the current escalation,” he stated.
The warning followed a strike in northern Iraq that killed three members of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), which said the attack was carried out by the United States and Israel.
Macron also denounced a drone attack targeting Barzani’s residence, describing it as “unacceptable,” and linked it to a broader surge in violence.
“This very worrying development adds to a rise in attacks against Iraqi institutions,” he said, noting that six Peshmerga fighters were killed earlier in the week in an Iranian missile strike.
Regional tensions have been fueled in part by concerns from Iran, which fears that Kurdish armed groups in northern Iraq could infiltrate its territory along the shared border.
