The government of Benue State has started evacuating its indigenes studying at the University of Jos following a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba and surrounding parts of Jos.

The incident, which resulted in multiple fatalities, has intensified insecurity in the area, prompting swift intervention by authorities.

In a statement released on Friday, Chief Press Secretary Tersoo Kula confirmed the development.

The university had earlier suspended first semester examinations and instructed students to vacate hostels and nearby areas from April 2, 2026, citing the deteriorating security situation.

Governor Hyacinth Alia said the evacuation was necessary to ensure the safety of Benue students studying outside their home state.

“This decision became necessary as it concerns the lives and welfare of our people, especially the future leaders studying outside the state,” he stated.

According to the government, more than 600 students have already been evacuated to Benue State, with additional transport arrangements underway for others who wish to return.

Governor Alia further disclosed that he is collaborating with Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State to address the situation and restore peace.

“We are working tirelessly with relevant authorities to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book and that normalcy is restored as soon as possible,” he added.
