Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has strongly condemned the United States for sinking an Iranian naval ship in international waters near Sri Lanka, calling the act an “atrocity.”

Reacting to the incident on social media, Araghchi said the U.S. attack on the frigate Dena occurred far from Iran’s coastline and without warning.

“The US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores. Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning,” he posted on X.

The Iranian diplomat warned that Washington’s action could have serious consequences.

“Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret precedent it has set,” he added.

The vessel, identified as IRIS Dena, was reportedly returning from joint naval engagements hosted by the Indian Navy when it was struck.
