A premature explosion has reportedly killed five suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) operatives, including an alleged medical officer and four bomb-making specialists, while they were assembling improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.

The incident occurred at Maina Daya Village, between Sabon Tumbu and Jubilaram, approximately 29 kilometres east of Monguno Local Government Area, according to intelligence sources cited by security analyst Zagazola Makama on Tuesday.

The sources identified the deceased as Usman Dan Fulani, said to be an ISWAP medical officer, along with two foreign Arab IED experts and two ISWAP bomb-making specialists.

According to the sources, the explosion occurred while the suspects were allegedly preparing explosives intended for deployment, suggesting the group was planning additional attacks targeting major military supply routes within the Sector 1 area of Operation HADIN KAI.

Security analysts assessed that the loss of the experienced bombmakers could temporarily disrupt ISWAP’s roadside bombing operations by weakening its IED manufacturing capability in the Marte-Monguno corridor.

Military sources further revealed that troops under Operation HADIN KAI have been instructed to intensify patrols, expand cordon-and-search missions, and launch precision operations across Monguno, Marte, and Gamboru Ngala to deny the terrorist group any opportunity to regroup or restore its IED network.
