The United States Department of State has issued a worldwide security advisory for US citizens, including those in Nigeria, as tensions escalate following American military strikes on Iran.

Released on Sunday, the alert called on Americans to stay vigilant amid shifting security developments that could affect travel and safety.

The advisory cautioned that periodic airspace closures may cause disruptions to international travel.

“Following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide and especially in the Middle East should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” it stated.

“They may experience travel disruptions due to periodic airspace closures. The Department of State advises Americans worldwide to exercise increased caution.”

US nationals were advised to register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and monitor the “U.S. Department of State Security Updates for US Citizens” WhatsApp channel for further information.

The advisory follows joint US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Reports say the attacks resulted in the deaths of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and armed forces chief of staff Abdolrahim Mousavi.

Authorities and regional analysts estimate the strikes have left more than 200 dead and over 700 wounded. Senior commanders within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other defence officials were also reportedly killed.

Following the attacks, President Donald Trump said Iran had agreed to return to negotiations with the United States.

According to Trump, Iranian officials reached out to initiate discussions, and he agreed to move forward with talks.
