Tesla’s ‘Flying’ Roadster: Elon Musk Reveals Thruster-Powered Car
Tesla CEO Elon Musk demonstrates a thruster-equipped Roadster, describes it as a “flying” car and announces plans for production in 2028.
Elon Musk has presented Tesla’s new Roadster sports car, describing it as a “flying” car equipped with thrusters during a launch event at a SpaceX test facility in Texas on Thursday.
The demonstration was streamed live on Tesla’s X account, with footage showing the car taking off from a steep ramp and coming back down onto its wheels.
“Flying cars are real,” the Tesla chief executive declared during the presentation.
However, Musk cautioned that the project was not without uncertainty, saying the vehicle’s “success is not guaranteed” but that “it will probably work.”
He explained that the car uses “ultra high-pressure air tanks” to generate the force needed to propel it into the air.
Musk also highlighted the partnership between Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer, and SpaceX, his rocket company, describing the development as “what happens when you have a collaboration with the world’s best car company and the world’s best rocket company.”
The tech billionaire said production of the vehicle was scheduled to begin in 2028.
The unveiling comes as the flying-car industry continues to face significant technical and regulatory hurdles that have slowed its progress.
The concept dates back more than a century. American aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss unveiled the first flying car prototype in 1917, although practical designs have attracted greater attention in recent years following improvements in electric motors and high-performance battery technology.
