23 Killed, 108 Injured as Suicide Bombers Hit Maiduguri — Police

At least 23 people have been confirmed dead and 108 injured after coordinated suicide bomb attacks rocked Maiduguri on Monday evening, according to the Borno State Police Command.

The attacks, suspected to have been carried out by Boko Haram insurgents, targeted crowded areas such as the Monday Market, the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover.

Local sources, however, indicated that the casualty figure may be higher, with reports suggesting over 40 deaths, including the attackers, as some injured victims later died.

Police spokesperson ASP Kenneth Daso confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that the blasts occurred at about 7:24 p.m.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers… a total of 23 persons lost their lives, while 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” he said.

Security operatives, including the police, military, and other agencies, were quickly deployed to the scene, while the EOD unit carried out checks to prevent further explosions.

The Borno State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the affected areas and extended condolences to victims, assuring the public of ongoing security efforts.

Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and SEMA, transported the injured to medical facilities.

Authorities said normalcy has been restored, with heightened security measures across Maiduguri and surrounding areas.

The military task force, Operation HADIN KAI, said the attacks were aimed at causing panic and mass casualties, adding that troops responded swiftly to assist in rescue and security operations.

Residents have been advised to remain calm but alert, avoid crowded places where possible, and report suspicious movements to security agencies.

Officials also pledged to pursue those behind the attacks and ensure lasting peace in the region.
