Bundibugyo Strain Confirmed in Nigeria’s First Ebola Case, Diplomat Reportedly Critically Ill
Nigeria confirms the Bundibugyo strain in its first detected Ebola case. Officials say the patient is a diplomat who has developed multi-organ failure.
Nigeria has confirmed that its first detected Ebola case involves the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, with officials revealing on Wednesday that the infected person is a diplomat whose condition has deteriorated into multi-organ failure.
The development was announced during an emergency meeting convened to discuss the outbreak.
Olajumoke Babatunde, director of Public Health Laboratory Services at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), explained that the strain was established through three levels of molecular testing.
“We did three levels of tests, but all molecular. The strain was Bundibugyo,” Babatunde said, linking the identified strain to the one behind the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A separate official disclosed the patient’s diplomatic status and said the individual had developed “multi organ failure”, indicating a serious deterioration in their health.
