Dolly Parton, the legendary US country music singer-songwriter whose journey from poverty in Tennessee took her to international stardom, has died at 80.

Parton died peacefully in Nashville on Tuesday following a brief battle with cancer, her publicist said.

Her family confirmed the death, with her nephew saying in a social media video: “Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus.”

He praised the late entertainer for having “opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians, and dreamers from every walk of life.”

Parton’s death marks the loss of one of the most recognisable figures in American popular culture.

The girl from Tennessee

Born Dolly Rebecca Parton on January 19, 1946, in Sevierville, Tennessee, she grew up as the fourth of 12 children in a poor family living in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Her musical talent emerged early. She began writing songs at about 10 and performed for chickens around the family’s cabin before making her Grand Ole Opry debut at 13.

Following high school, she moved to Nashville and pursued a career in country music.

Her breakthrough came in 1967 when, aged 21, she joined Porter Wagoner’s syndicated television programme and quickly became a household name.

With her distinctive soprano voice, songwriting ability and unmistakable personality, Parton went on to become one of country music’s biggest stars.

Hits that became timeless classics

Parton wrote around 3,000 songs during her career, producing some of the most enduring compositions in country music.

Among them were “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.”

The latter became a worldwide phenomenon when Whitney Houston recorded it for the 1992 film “The Bodyguard.”

Parton’s version of the song was originally written as a tribute to Wagoner when their professional partnership ended in 1973.

Even Elvis Presley wanted to record it, but Parton rejected his team’s demand for half the publishing rights because she owned the rights herself.

Her catalogue ultimately helped make her one of the best-selling female artists in music history.

Parton released 49 studio albums and more than 100 compilation and collaboration albums, sold more than 100 million records and recorded 26 No. 1 country hits.

She won 10 Grammy Awards and 13 Academy of Country Music Awards.

From country music to Hollywood

Parton’s influence was not limited to music.

She became a successful actress, starring in films including “9 to 5” and “Steel Magnolias.”

She also became famous for her elaborate wigs, glamorous outfits and hourglass figure, deliberately turning her appearance into an important part of her public persona.

In 2001, she told National Public Radio: “I love makeup, I love clothes, and I got the personality that can pull it off.”

Parton’s wit and self-confidence allowed her to play with stereotypes while simultaneously building a hugely successful career.

The businesswoman

In 1986, Parton launched Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

The theme park became a major success and one of the most prominent examples of an entertainment personality turning a personal brand into a major business.

She also established publishing and music companies, a radio station and restaurants and ventured into books, including a bestselling novel co-written with James Patterson.

Her entrepreneurial success helped cement her status as more than a performer.

A powerful philanthropic legacy

Parton’s charitable work became another defining aspect of her public life.

Through her Imagination Library, she helped provide roughly 100 million books to children around the world.

In 2020, she donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University for COVID-19 research, supporting work that contributed to the development of Moderna’s vaccine.

She also supported numerous causes and used her wealth and influence to help communities and children.

Parton’s collaborations continued throughout her career, including her work on the 2018 film “Dumplin’,” for which she wrote music with Jennifer Aniston.

Honours and enduring influence

Parton was honoured with the Kennedy Center Honor in 2006 and later entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

Her songs were recorded by performers across genres, including Shania Twain, Sinéad O’Connor and the White Stripes.

She also became one of the rare entertainers whose appeal crossed generations, musical boundaries and political divides.

Tributes poured in following her death, with fellow entertainers and public figures celebrating her songwriting, generosity, humour and influence.

Parton’s life was a remarkable transformation from a poor childhood in Tennessee to global fame.

But beyond the records, awards and Hollywood appearances, she leaves behind a body of music and charitable work that helped define her as one of America’s most enduring cultural icons.
