Jared Bridegan: A Tire, a Trust Fund and an Execution -By Fransiscus Nanga Roka

This case reveals news that goes beyond three defendants. High conflict family litigation is privatized emotional warfare until it becomes real. Property is divided and parenting time awarded in courts of law, yet prosecutors rarely have integrated systems to flag potential stalking, murder solicitation coercive control or suspicious third party surveilling.

The cold blooded execution of Jared Bridegan was staged as a road rage hit. The forensic thread that prosecutors likened to the fabric of a murder-for-hire conspiracy spun from money, enmity and a toxic custody battle was not DNA or hair. It was a discarded tire.

The Microsoft design manager, 33, was returning his twins to the Jacksonville Beach, Florida, home of former wife Shanna Gardner on February 16, 2022. Bridegan was driving home with his two-year-old daughter, Bexley, when he spotted a tire purposefully placed in front of a dark section of road. When he walked outside to move it area only, he was fired two times at point blank range. His daughter was still secured in the backseat unhurt but forced to see her father killed.

This would be the first verdict in relation to the conspiracy delivered by a Duval County jury four years later. It convicted Gardner’s husband, Mario Fernandez Saldana, of first-degree murder and solicitation to commit a capital felony Aug. 26 after deliberating fewer than four hours. First-degree murder carries the mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The evidence from the prosecution was circumstantial but cumulative. The blue Ford F-150 that was involved in the incident was registered to Henry Tenon, a former tenant of Fernandez Saldana and allegedly working with him on the house where Nicky’s remains were found. DNA matching his was found in the false tyre. In the weeks following the murder, Fernandez Saldana wrote him checks amounting to at least $10,000 cash on fake invoices for landscaping and roof repairs as well as a business consulting endeavor. They also showed the two men exchanged many messages.

The defence had said the payments were for legitimate work, and no witness heard Fernandez Saldana ordering a killing. Conspiracy, however, is seldom memorialized in a signed contract. From the coordinated activity, from money transfers, through communication and from the fact that it was an ambush requiring knowledge of Bridegan’s routine, a jury could draw such a conclusion.

The “why,” according to prosecutors, was years of hostility over custody, religion and parenting. They claimed Gardner and Fernandez Saldana wanted Bridegan out of the way so that Gardner could dictate matters concerning the twins — and free herself from court litigation holding her and family finances captive. But Gardner has not been found guilty. To characterize her now as the “mastermind” would substitute trial by assembly for entertainment puddles of true crime.

Her trial has been delayed until May 2027. Tenon pleaded guilty in 2023 and was cooperating before withdrawing that plea in 2026, he is also again presumed innocent and will likely head to trial with Palmer in 2027. Separate proceedings must find guilt or innocence from evidence that is otherwise admissible—not simply inherit Fernandez Saldana because he was there.

Florida must mandate tactics for identifying lethality in domestic custody disputes that involve bona fide threats to life, obsessive monitoring or a history of escalating violence. Secure channels are needed for family and criminal courts to share information about protective orders and threats. So, prosecutors have to lay out the entire forensic chain of custody and financial analysis so that any subsequent conviction stands up on appeal. Bridegan’s children also need to be safeguarded by those courts and broadcasters from further exploitation.

Justice, in the end, can never become a live-streamed morality tale. The public can sift through the evidence, but it should not feed a wounded child to the hounds for sport or accept an accusation as fact.

The tire stopped Bridegan’s car. It is possible that the money financed the plot you are said to have hatched. Due process must not be upended by either.
