A 31-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter have died after lightning struck them while they were returning home in the United States.

The victims, Kenya Glasgow and her daughter, Kennedy, were reportedly stepping out of their vehicle on Sunday afternoon when they were struck by lightning.

Police said a 911 call was received at around 2:30 p.m., prompting emergency responders to rush to the scene, where they found the mother and child lying on a sidewalk.

Prince Moody, a witness, said he saw an orange glow through his window before going outside to offer assistance.

“Very traumatic scene,” Moody said. He added that he attempted to help and calm the family before immediately calling 911.

Kenya was transported to North Broward Medical Center, while Kennedy was taken to Broward Health Medical Center. However, efforts by emergency responders and medical staff to save their lives were unsuccessful, and both were pronounced dead shortly after reaching the hospitals.

Speaking about the tragedy, the children’s father, Kameron Glasgow, described his wife and daughter as “amazing, amazing people”.

“My wife, the biggest heart in the world. The biggest heart in the world,” Glasgow said through tears.

He said Kenya had always been the kind of person who put other people first and played a major role in shaping his life.

“That was my hero next to my dad,” he said. “Because I wanted to show up for people how my wife does. She helped make me into the man I am today.”

Glasgow said the family had planned to go indoors for dinner as the rain intensified shortly before the incident.

“We saw that the rain was picking up and we just said, ‘Hey. We need to get the girls inside,’” he recalled.

The family’s surviving child is Kennedy’s twin sister, a circumstance Glasgow said would make the tragedy even more difficult.

“It’s going to crush me when Kennedy’s twin sister asks about her sister and mother,” he said.

Glasgow remembered Kennedy as an energetic child who knew how to sing every word of Benson Boone’s songs.

“It’s going to be tough to lose somebody that I’ve been with for half of my life,” he said. “It’s going to be tough. But I’ll be OK. I have to be because I have another beautiful daughter inside there.”
