The Nigerian naira remained relatively stable against the US dollar on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, although a noticeable difference persisted between the official foreign exchange market and the parallel market.

In the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the latest available data put the dollar exchange rate at approximately ₦1,346.34/$1. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) states that the NFEM rate is calculated using the volume-weighted average of transactions and represents the official exchange rate for the day.

The naira also closed at about ₦1,346.90 to the dollar in the latest confirmed official-market figures, keeping the exchange rate around the ₦1,347/$ mark.

Meanwhile, the dollar was trading at approximately ₦1,400/$1 in the parallel market on Wednesday, according to Aboki Forex, a platform that monitors and regularly updates street-market rates.

Based on the ₦1,400/$ parallel-market rate, $100 is equivalent to about ₦140,000, while $1,000 is worth approximately ₦1.4 million.

This means the gap between the NFEM rate of ₦1,346.34 and the parallel-market rate of ₦1,400 is roughly ₦53.66 per dollar.

The naira’s relative stability follows improved conditions in the country’s foreign exchange market. Reuters reported last week that the official exchange rate was around ₦1,345/$, while the street-market rate was approximately ₦1,410/$, suggesting that the gap between the two markets has narrowed.

According to the CBN’s latest published information, NFEM rates are determined from actual transactions in the official market. Parallel-market rates, however, may move throughout the day in response to changes in dollar supply, demand, location and transaction volumes.

Consequently, Nigerians looking to buy or sell dollars today may receive rates that differ from the published figures, depending on whether they transact through a bank, Bureau de Change operator or another dealer.

The dollar-to-naira exchange rate may continue to fluctuate during the day as market liquidity and demand conditions change.
