AFCON Final Row: Motsepe Vows to Honour CAS Verdict on Senegal Appeal
CAF’s Patrice Motsepe vows to implement CAS verdict as Senegal challenges overturned AFCON final win against Morocco.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe has pledged to accept and enforce the ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the ongoing dispute over the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco.
Speaking in Cairo, Motsepe said: “I will respect and implement the CAS decision. My personal opinion regarding the matter is irrelevant.”
The controversy stems from Senegal’s appeal after CAF’s appeals body overturned their 1-0 win against Morocco in the final.
The match itself ended dramatically, with Senegal’s players and coaching staff briefly walking off in protest after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco. The decision sparked tension before the game resumed.
Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missed the penalty, and Senegal’s Pape Gueye eventually scored in extra time to secure what was initially considered victory.
While CAF’s disciplinary committee issued fines, it did not alter the result. However, Morocco’s successful appeal led to the match being awarded 3-0 in their favour.
Motsepe reiterated that the appeals process is handled by independent legal professionals, distancing CAF leadership from direct influence.
Senegal have continued to assert their claim, parading the AFCON trophy during a recent friendly against Peru and wearing jerseys featuring two stars—symbolising both their 2022 title and the disputed 2026 final.
Motsepe said he plans to visit both nations to encourage reconciliation and collaboration for the advancement of African football.
CAF also announced upcoming regulatory reforms to improve confidence in officiating and judicial systems, particularly around refereeing and VAR decisions.
Additionally, Nigeria-born Samson Adamu has been named caretaker general secretary, succeeding Veron Mosengo-Omba, who retires after reaching the organisation’s age limit.
