Influential US hip-hop figure Afrika Bambaataa, the DJ behind the iconic 1982 track “Planet Rock,” has died at 68, according to his former label on Thursday.

Tommy Boy Records paid tribute on Instagram, saying: “With his passing, we reflect on his contributions to the genre and broader culture, which continue to this day,” sharing the message alongside his image.

Meanwhile, TMZ reported, citing unnamed sources, that he passed away in Pennsylvania around 3:00 a.m. (0700 GMT) on Thursday due to complications from cancer.
