Joao Pedro has committed his future to Chelsea after signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2032, with the option of extending the agreement by another two years.

The striker joined Chelsea from Brighton for £60 million ($82 million) a year ago and had previously been contracted until 2032 with an additional-year option.

His impressive debut campaign has now earned him an improved long-term commitment from the London club after he scored 20 goals in his first season with the Blues.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea,” Joao Pedro told the club’s website.

The Brazilian added that playing for a major club had always been an ambition of his.

“I always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to give my long-term commitment to this club. Chelsea has a long tradition of winning and it has big ambitions for the future.”

He also spoke about his relationship with the club and his life in London.

“I have a very good relationship with everyone here at the club and I have felt at home here in London from the moment that I joined.”

Chelsea Fend Off Transfer Interest

The contract extension comes amid reported interest in Joao Pedro from Barcelona and underlines Chelsea’s desire to retain the 24-year-old.

His new deal is also a boost for the striker following his surprise omission from Brazil’s squad for this year’s World Cup.

Chelsea will begin the new Premier League season under manager Xabi Alonso on Monday when they travel to face west London rivals Fulham.

Joao Pedro’s goalscoring form is expected to be an important part of Chelsea’s plans as the club begins the new campaign.
