Angelique Kidjo Makes History as First Black African With Hollywood Walk of Fame Star
Beninese music icon Angelique Kidjo has been honoured with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, marking a historic milestone in her career.
Beninese music legend Angelique Kidjo has become the first Black African to be honoured with a star on the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The five-time Grammy winner received the recognition on Tuesday at a star-studded ceremony in Hollywood, where prominent figures from the entertainment industry gathered to celebrate her remarkable career.
Under the California sunshine and surrounded by Hollywood’s famous palm trees, the 66-year-old singer unveiled her star along the busy Hollywood Boulevard.
Reflecting on the significance of the moment, Kidjo spoke about Africa’s influence on music around the world.
“We Africans don’t know what we’ve given to the world,” she said.
“Without us, there’s no music possible on this planet.”
Kidjo thanked her family and professional team before spontaneously breaking into song, captivating guests at the ceremony.
More than four decades of global success
Born in Benin, Kidjo has enjoyed an international career spanning more than 40 years and 18 albums, establishing herself as one of Africa’s most influential musical exports.
Her achievements include five Grammy Awards and recognition by Time magazine as one of the world’s 100 most influential people.
She has also featured among the BBC’s nominees for Africa’s 50 most iconic figures and was recognised by The Guardian among the 100 most inspiring people in the world.
Harvey Mason Jr. of the Recording Academy described Kidjo as a “rare artist”, saying her career had helped elevate the global music community.
“Your example has elevated our global music community, and your work continues to remind us that music is more than entertainment; it’s connection,” Mason Jr. said.
He added that although the Hollywood star would permanently commemorate her achievements, her lasting legacy would be measured by the people she has influenced, the barriers she has broken and the connections she has created worldwide.
Willem Dafoe praises Kidjo’s energy and activism
Hollywood actor Willem Dafoe also celebrated Kidjo’s talent and stage presence, recalling his first experience watching her perform live.
“The first time I saw Angelique perform live, I thought her music, her dancing, her commitment were incredible,” said the Platoon actor.
“She is, without a doubt, the hardest-working woman in show business.”
Dafoe said Kidjo’s humanitarian activities were even more remarkable, particularly her work with the Batonga Foundation, which seeks to empower girls and young women in Africa.
“This is not a token celebrity involvement; it is an extension of what she does with her music,” he said.
“She stirs us, lifts us up, and reminds us that we’re all connected, and that love and understanding is the way.”
Kidjo’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star adds another landmark achievement to a career that has positioned her as a major voice for African music, culture and humanitarian causes on the global stage.
