Boehly, Walter May Sell Chelsea Shares to Clearlake Amid Ownership Tensions

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter could sell their Chelsea shares to Clearlake Capital, with reports suggesting they value their stake at £5 billion.

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and director Mark Walter are reportedly weighing a potential sale of their shares in the Premier League club to majority owner Clearlake Capital.

The development comes amid reports of differences over the club’s direction, with Boehly said to be unhappy with several aspects of Chelsea’s operations.

Boehly and Walter were part of the investment group that joined forces with Clearlake to purchase Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for £2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) in May 2022.

Clearlake currently controls 62 percent of Chelsea, while Boehly, Walter and fellow investor Hansjorg Wyss own the remaining 38 percent through Blueco Holdings.

According to reports, Boehly’s concerns have centred on Chelsea’s recruitment strategy, the appointment and management of coaches, as well as plans for a possible new stadium.

The reports also claim that Boehly and Clearlake have attempted to buy one another’s stakes in Chelsea several times over the past two years.

Should Boehly and Walter proceed with a sale, they reportedly believe their stake in the club could be valued at approximately £5 billion.

The pair have maintained a close personal and business relationship and have jointly invested in the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and the LA Sparks women’s basketball franchise.

Chelsea’s recent sporting fortunes have been underwhelming, with the Blues finishing 10th in the Premier League last season.

The club has appointed former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso as its new head coach ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Alonso’s Chelsea side will open the new Premier League season with an away fixture against Fulham on August 24.
