Nigerians applying for US visas in Abuja are facing a new processing arrangement following the United States Department of State’s decision to realign routine visa services across several African countries.

The new arrangement took effect on August 1, 2026, as the US moves visa processing in affected locations to designated regional hubs. Abuja is among the locations affected by the realignment.

The US government said the decision is designed to strengthen national security, improve operational efficiency and create more consistent standards for visa screening, vetting and adjudication.

The State Department said the Trump administration is focused on national security and the efficient deployment of government resources.

It added that the department routinely evaluates its overseas operations to ensure they support US priorities while maintaining strict security standards.

According to the department, the use of regional visa hubs is a long-standing approach that has already been successfully implemented in parts of Africa and Europe.

Three major nonimmigrant visa categories affected

Among the routine nonimmigrant visa services covered by the realignment are:

1. Tourist visas: Applications from people seeking temporary entry into the US for tourism and related purposes.

2. Business visas: Applications from travellers visiting the US for approved business-related activities.

3. Petition-based nonimmigrant visas: Visa applications based on an approved petition for temporary travel to the United States.

However, the US Department of State clarified that the changes are broader than these three categories. The realignment covers all routine immigrant and nonimmigrant visa services at the affected posts.

Immigrant visa services affected include immediate relative, family preference and employment-based categories, as well as fiancé(e), adoption, Diversity Visa and certain follow-to-join cases.

Where will affected applicants go?

The US has designated regional visa hubs across Africa, including Lagos, Accra, Abidjan, Addis Ababa, Cape Town, Dakar, Johannesburg, Nairobi and several other locations.

For applicants from countries where routine visa operations have been realigned, the US Department of State says they should apply at the designated alternate processing post, subject to the applicable rules for their nationality or country of residence.

Nigerian applicants are therefore advised to check the latest US visa instructions before booking an appointment or making any payment.

The State Department has also clarified that the realignment does not mean the affected embassies or consulates are closing. Instead, routine visa processing is being transferred to designated regional hubs while the diplomatic missions continue their other operations.

The US government said the overall objective is to maintain rigorous security screening and vetting while improving the efficiency and consistency of its visa operations.
