The 2026 summer transfer window has seen a number of Super Eagles players take on fresh challenges, with several Nigerian internationals moving to new clubs across England, Germany, Italy, Turkey and other European leagues.

Taiwo Awoniyi’s £17 million move from Nottingham Forest to Coventry City is the latest notable transfer involving a Super Eagles star.

The striker’s permanent transfer ended his four-year stay at the City Ground and gives him a fresh opportunity with newly promoted Coventry City.

Awoniyi is not alone, however. Several other Nigerian internationals have also secured new clubs this summer.

1. Kelechi Iheanacho — Bursaspor

Kelechi Iheanacho has left Scottish champions Celtic and moved to Turkey after a spell that saw him contribute to the club’s Premiership and Scottish Cup successes.

Despite initially signing a one-year deal with an option for an additional season, Celtic reportedly decided not to retain the Nigerian forward.

Iheanacho has subsequently joined Bursaspor.

2. Taiwo Awoniyi — Coventry City

Awoniyi has left Nottingham Forest after four years at the Premier League club.

He completed a permanent move to Coventry City for a reported £17 million and will now be part of Frank Lampard’s squad as Coventry prepares for life in the Premier League.

Although his Forest career was affected by inconsistency, Awoniyi remained a respected and influential presence within the dressing room.

3. Akor Adams — Venezia

Akor Adams has swapped Spain for Italy after completing a permanent transfer from Sevilla to Venezia.

The Serie A club confirmed his arrival on July 22 and handed him a contract running until June 2030.

Adams spent time at Sevilla after joining the club in January 2025, scoring 10 goals and registering four assists in 37 appearances.

4. Raphael Onyedika — Eintracht Frankfurt

Raphael Onyedika has left Club Brugge after establishing himself as an important part of the Belgian club’s midfield.

The midfielder had attracted interest from teams in Turkey, England and Saudi Arabia but ultimately opted for a move to Germany.

He has joined Eintracht Frankfurt and will now seek to establish himself in the Bundesliga.

The move could also see him follow the path of former Nigerian superstar Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, who previously played for Eintracht Frankfurt.

5. Gift Orban — Amedspor

Gift Orban has left Hellas Verona temporarily after a challenging spell with the Italian club.

The Nigerian forward had joined Verona on loan from Hoffenheim and reportedly faced disciplinary issues, including an alleged confrontation with a fan.

He has now moved on loan to newly promoted Turkish Super League side Amedspor.

The transfer gives Orban another chance to regain his confidence and reproduce the form that previously earned him a reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest young forwards.

6. Frank Onyeka — Coventry City

Frank Onyeka has completed a permanent transfer to Coventry City after initially joining the club on loan from Brentford.

The Nigerian midfielder played a key part in Coventry’s promotion push and helped the team navigate a difficult period during the campaign.

His loan reportedly contained an automatic purchase clause that was activated after Coventry secured promotion to the Premier League.

7. Chidozie Awaziem — Konyaspor

Chidozie Awaziem has also secured a move to Turkey after leaving Nantes in France.

The experienced Super Eagles defender joined Konyaspor, marking another return to Turkish football after his previous loan spell with Caykur Rizespor in 2019.

His transfer adds to the growing number of Nigerian internationals plying their trade in Turkey.

8. Leon Balogun — ETO Gyor

Former Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has moved from Cyprus to Hungary.

The 38-year-old left Aris Limassol and joined ETO Gyor, adding another European league to a career that has already taken him across several countries.

Balogun will now rely on his experience to contribute to the Hungarian club as he continues his career.
