Maresca’s Man City Era Begins With 3-0 Loss as Arsenal Issue Title Warning

Arsenal beat Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield as Enzo Maresca suffered a difficult first major test following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

CARDIFF — Enzo Maresca’s first major test as Manchester City manager ended in disappointment on Sunday as Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 Community Shield victory in Cardiff.

The defeat marked City’s first showpiece appearance in a decade without Pep Guardiola on the touchline and provided a sobering introduction to the challenges awaiting Maresca following the Spaniard’s departure.

Guardiola ended his trophy-laden City reign after last season, having won 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles. Maresca, 46, has now inherited the task of maintaining the standards established during Guardiola’s era.

Maresca previously served as one of Guardiola’s assistants during City’s treble-winning 2022-23 campaign. His managerial career, however, has been relatively short, having managed Leicester for one season before leaving Chelsea in January after less than two seasons.

Arsenal wasted no time exposing City’s weaknesses. Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the game, while Kai Havertz headed Arsenal’s second midway through the first half after City failed to defend effectively.

Martin Odegaard then added a third shortly after the interval, completing a commanding Arsenal performance.

The defeat suggested Maresca has plenty to fix if City are to challenge Arsenal, who finished seven points ahead of Guardiola’s team last season.

“We can find many things after this kind of defeat,” Maresca said. “For sure the first two goals we concede I don’t like.”

He criticised City’s defending for both goals, adding: “The first one after 24 seconds and the second one there was no pressure on the ball.”

Maresca also suggested the physical condition of his squad may have played a role, particularly because several players had been involved at the World Cup.

“I don’t know if it was physical condition, we had many players at the World Cup. After the first goal the reaction was very good, but after the second goal it was more complicated,” he said.

The performance drew harsh criticism from pundits, with former Arsenal defender Martin Keown saying Maresca should be “embarrassed”.

“It was quite stunning to see Man City’s body language, the players, the manager, it looks a bit lifeless as a group,” Keown said.

Ally McCoist was equally struck by Arsenal’s superiority, saying: “How much do we look into it? Well, I thought it was the biggest gap I’ve seen between the sides.”

Arsenal fans revelled in their team’s dominance, taunting Maresca and City with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” and “are you Tottenham in disguise?”

The Community Shield is not necessarily a reliable predictor of the season ahead, but City’s lacklustre display leaves Maresca with several issues to address.

Rodri’s absence was particularly notable, with the influential Spain midfielder left out following a rejected bid from Barcelona. New signing Elliot Anderson and star striker Erling Haaland also failed to make a significant impact.

“Rodri is a player who just won the World Cup and Ballon d’Or. He’s a top player, all the teams need Rodri,” Maresca said.

For Arsenal, the victory offered another indication of their determination to remain competitive after ending their 22-year wait for the league title.

Manager Mikel Arteta said his players were motivated by the desire to repeat and surpass their previous success.

“The desire comes because I want to live that moment again. I want to live other moments, even bigger,” Arteta said.

“We know what it’s going to take. We know the difficulty of the task. We know that it’s going to demand something special and we are ready for it.

“If we drive the standards at this level, I’m sure we’re going to be really competitive.”
