ABUJA — Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding in parts of Abuja, leaving residents to deal with damaged property, submerged vehicles and, in some cases, displacement from their homes.

Several districts across the Federal Capital Territory were affected by the flooding over the weekend, with residents reporting damage to fences, gates, vehicles and other property.

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had not provided an official assessment of the damage or the number of affected residents and households as of the time of filing this report.

Katampe Main was reportedly among the worst-hit communities, with residents saying the area had been flooded for the third time.

The repeated incidents have heightened concerns about whether existing drainage infrastructure is sufficient to accommodate the rapid development taking place in the district.

One resident, writing on X, described the situation as severe and said floodwaters had damaged fences and gates and affected vehicles and other belongings.

The resident also questioned the adequacy of the area’s drainage system in the face of increasing development.

In Utako, Theo Agada said he narrowly escaped death when his car was submerged by floodwaters around Dan Suleiman Street.

Agada, who said he had lived in the FCT since 1994, shared his experience on X.

“I almost died yesterday in Utako, off Dan Suleiman Street, after my car got submerged, but mercy said no,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, politician and entrepreneur Tein Jack-Rich expressed concern over the impact of the flooding in parts of Abuja in a Facebook post.

Jack-Rich blamed what he described as a disregard for Abuja’s original master plan for the situation and urged residents affected by the flooding to remain calm.

The latest flooding has intensified calls for authorities to address Abuja’s drainage problems and review urban planning measures as the capital continues to expand.

Residents are demanding urgent intervention to improve drainage infrastructure and reduce the risk of repeated flooding.

FEMA officials had not responded to enquiries regarding the incident, including the extent of the damage and the number of people or households affected, by the time this report was filed.
