Eight people died in a plane crash at a remote US military site in Alaska as authorities launch an investigation into the cause.
ALASKA — Eight people have died after a civilian-contracted aircraft crashed at a remote US Air Force facility in southwestern Alaska, military authorities confirmed Thursday.
According to the Alaskan Command, the aircraft went down at the airport of the long-range radar installation at Cape Newenham, a remote location on Alaska’s southwestern tip.
Emergency responders who reached the wreckage confirmed that all eight people aboard had died.
The Alaskan Command has not released the names or nationalities of the victims and has yet to disclose what they were doing at the radar facility when the crash occurred.
The site operates a long-range radar system used to monitor aircraft flying in Alaskan airspace.
An Alaskan Command spokesperson said investigators had begun examining the circumstances that led to the crash. The victims’ identities will be made public only after their families have been informed.
Lieutenant General Robert Davis, chief of Alaskan Command, expressed condolences following the tragedy.
“This is a devastating loss for our military family and the communities we serve,” Davis said.
“These individuals were dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment,” he added.
The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
