Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, Governor of Benue State, has assured Nigerians abroad that the state is recovering steadily, with improvements in security, education, healthcare, and economic development.

Speaking at the 2nd Virtual Town Hall with the Benue Diaspora, organized by the Directorate for Diaspora Linkages and Investments, Alia praised diaspora engagement in the state’s growth.

He described the state he inherited as one “struggling with insecurity, economic decline, and weakened institutions,” but said significant progress has been achieved. Violence, once widespread across 17 LGAs, has been reduced to a few areas thanks to collaboration with federal agencies and modern security measures.

Many IDPs have begun returning home with support from the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, UBA, DSS, and Nasarawa State, amounting to N1.27 billion.

Alia revealed that over 22% of the 2026 budget is allocated to education and healthcare improvements. Economically, he highlighted the revival of Taraku Mills, strengthening of soybean production, and support for local factories producing bread, juice, and beverages, creating jobs and keeping value within the state.

Infrastructure projects, including roads in Makurdi and Gboko, and the Wurukum flyover, are underway, alongside plans for civil servant housing and investment in Makurdi’s “Renewed Hope Estate.”

Addressing diaspora concerns ahead of 2027 elections, Alia said, “Rebuilding Benue is like healing an old wound—it takes time, patience, and collective effort. We are open to ideas, continuous learning, and active diaspora participation. Together, we can build a stronger and more prosperous Benue.”
