Authorities in the town of Boto have launched a formal investigation following reports that a copy of the Holy Quran was allegedly thrown into a public toilet facility. The incident has sparked anger and concern among residents, religious leaders, and rights groups.

According to sources, SHEHU USMAN and Abdullahi SHEHU, in their separate report, stated that the incident occurred in the early hours of 07/05/2025, when cleaning staff at a community toilet in the one house and the central district discovered the holy book submerged in a toilet bowl. Early witness accounts suggest the act may have been intentional. While confirmed reports claim the suspects  are Muslims, police verified the identity and arrested the suspects for investigation.

“We condemn any act of desecration against religious texts, regardless of who is responsible. Such actions do not reflect the teachings of any faith and only fuel division,” says Mal. Nuhu Ismaila Umar, a senior religious leader in Boto. He urged the public to remain calm and allow the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.

In response to the growing public tension, Boto Police Chief Inspector Usman Musa  stated that a task force has been assigned to the case. “We are carefully reviewing all evidence, including surveillance footage from nearby establishments. It’s critical that we rely on facts, not speculation,” he says in an interview with our reporter.

Several interfaith and civil society organizations have issued joint statements condemning the incident and warning against spreading misinformation online, especially through social media platforms. “Acts like this can easily ignite unrest if not handled responsibly. We urge the public to refrain from posting unverified claims or inflammatory messages,” said Alh. Haruna Ibrahim, the Village Head.

Protests were reported by youth on 07/05/2025, though they remained largely peaceful. Community elders and youth leaders were seen working with local law enforcement to de-escalate tensions and encourage dialogue. Security has been heightened in sensitive areas as a precautionary measure.

The community has also want to draw the attention of the state level and the Ministry of Religious Affairs to issue a brief statement calling for respect, tolerance, and due process. The local government authority pledged to work with local authorities to ensure the incident is addressed transparently and justly.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have encouraged anyone with information to come forward by contacting the Boto Police Department or submitting anonymous tips. Further developments will be reported as more details emerge.
