Democracy Day: A Clarion Call To Both The Rulers And The Ruled -By Ibraheem Iyanoluwa Jelili
As we celebrate Democracy Day and remember the sacrifices of our lives Heroes, a pertinent question arises for those currently in positions of authority: what legacy do you wish future generations to associate with your administration? History will judge every leader not by promises made, but by the impact of their service on the lives of the people.
Today marks a significant and unforgettable moment in the democratic history of Nigeria. June 12 reminds us of the sacrifice of a great patriot and democratic icon, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola, whose aspiration to lead the nation was tragically cut short. His struggle and sacrifice remain a symbol of Nigeria’s quest for democracy, justice, and good governance. Consequently, June 12 will forever occupy a special place in the democratic journey of our nation.
As I reflected on the state of democracy in our beloved country, Nigeria, my thoughts turned to the remarkable contributions of our past national heroes such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. Their legacies continue to resonate across generations. Why are they still celebrated today? The answer is simple: they dedicated themselves to the peace, progress, and development of Nigeria. They were patriotic Leaders who placed national interest above personal ambition and ensured that the welfare of the people remained paramount.
When one compares their era with the present day, the contrast is evident. Although they faced numerous challenges during their time, they confronted them with courage, vision, and statesmanship.
My sincere appeal to the present Government is to emulate the exemplary leadership qualities of these great nationalists. Their commitment to nation-building should serve as a guide for contemporary leaders. While no era is without its challenges, it is difficult to imagine criminals operating with the level of impunity currently witnessed in parts of the Country. Today, insecurity in the form of banditry, kidnapping, and violent crimes has made travel unsafe for many Nigerians. Citizens continue to ask: when shall we overcome these challenges?
Furthermore, the economic realities facing ordinary Nigerians are alarming. Many citizens struggle daily to afford basic necessities, including food. It is unfortunate that a Nation blessed with abundant natural and human resources continues to grapple with widespread hardship. This should serve as a wake-up call to the Federal, State, and Local Governments to intensify efforts toward restoring the nation’s prosperity and improving the welfare of the people.
As we celebrate Democracy Day and remember the sacrifices of our lives Heroes, a pertinent question arises for those currently in positions of authority: what legacy do you wish future generations to associate with your administration? History will judge every leader not by promises made, but by the impact of their service on the lives of the people.
However, nation-building is not the sole responsibility of Government. Citizens also have a vital role to play in the development of the Country. It is easy to place all blame on Government, but many societal problems are aggravated by the actions of individuals. For instance, some Traders engage in dishonest practices by manipulating measuring instruments and selling products below standard quantities. Such conduct only worsens the economic difficulties faced by fellow citizens.
Likewise, some religious Leaders exploit the faith and trust of their followers for personal gain. These and many other unethical practices contribute significantly to the challenges confronting our society. We must therefore engage in sincere self-reflection and recognize that national development requires both responsible leadership and responsible citizenship.
Recently, I witnessed a disturbing scenario where a young lady continuously collected money from a man under the pretense of intending to marry him, despite having no genuine interest in the relationship. Eventually, the man discovered that he had merely been treated as a source of financial support. Yet, when confronted with such unethical conduct, some people still find ways to blame the Government. This illustrates the need for personal accountability in our society.
In conclusion, there are numerous illegal, unethical, and immoral behaviours among Citizens that must be addressed. Democracy is often defined as the Government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Consequently, democracy imposes responsibilities on both the government and the governed. While Leaders must provide good governance, Citizens must also uphold values of honesty, integrity, patriotism, and accountability.
To our leaders, we entrusted you with the mandate to serve. The greater responsibility therefore rests upon your shoulders. To the Citizens, let us contribute positively to the growth and development of our Nation.
May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Amen)
