As unemployment continues to challenge many young Nigerians, digital skills are emerging as a powerful tool for economic empowerment and career development. Across the country, students and graduates are increasingly turning to technology-based skills to improve their academic performance, create income opportunities, and compete in a global marketplace.
For many youths, digital literacy goes beyond using social media. Skills such as graphic design, content creation, web development, data analysis, and digital marketing are opening doors to employment and entrepreneurship.
According to Elisha Ali Buba, a Level III Mass Communication student at Kashim Ibrahim University, digital skills have transformed the way students learn and work.
“Using tools like Google Docs helps students collaborate on assignments, while applications such as Notion make it easier to organise academic tasks,” he said. “Many students are also earning income through Canva designs, content creation, website development, and other digital services.”
Abuna noted that online learning platforms have made knowledge more accessible, allowing students in Nigeria to acquire skills from global institutions without leaving their communities. He added that digital tools have become particularly valuable in journalism, enabling reporters to record interviews, verify information, edit content, and publish stories efficiently.
Experts believe the growing demand for technology-driven solutions will continue to increase the value of digital skills in the labour market. However, challenges such as high internet costs, limited access to digital devices, and unreliable electricity remain significant barriers for many young people.
