Pope Leo delivered a forceful message against war on Saturday, urging global leaders and citizens to turn away from violence and “believe once again in love, moderation and good politics.”

During a prayer vigil for peace at St Peter’s Basilica, the head of the Catholic Church made an emotional appeal for an end to escalating conflicts worldwide, particularly in the Middle East.

“Enough of the idolatry of self and money! Enough of the display of power! Enough of war! True strength is shown in serving life,” he said.

Pope Leo said humanity needs faith “in order to face this dramatic hour in history together,” while directing his appeal to world leaders without naming any.

“Dear brothers and sisters, there are certainly binding responsibilities that fall to the leaders of nations. To them we cry out: Stop! It is time for peace! Sit at the table of dialogue and mediation, not at the table where rearmament is planned and deadly actions are decided!”

He urged people everywhere to contribute to a “Kingdom of peace” rooted in dialogue, friendship, and reconciliation.

“Let us believe once again in love, moderation and good politics.”

The pontiff described this ideal as protection against a “delusion of omnipotence,” adding that it should reject violence and injustice entirely.

“no sword, no drone, no vengeance, no trivialisation of evil, no unjust profit, but only dignity, understanding and forgiveness.”

Pope Leo also lamented ongoing global suffering, saying the world has become a place “where there never seem to be enough graves.”

Elected in May after the death of Pope Francis, the American pope is regarded as a moderate voice but has recently intensified his criticism of global conflicts, including repeated calls for de-escalation in the US-Israeli war on Iran.
