The people of Gombe have earned the right to trust their governor. Over seven years, Governor Inuwa Yahaya has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to their welfare. As the chat concluded, it became evident that people of Gombe are rallying behind him and pledging their support for his chosen successor. The message is unmistakable: they believe in his vision, they trust his judgment, and they are prepared to carry forward the work of development he has begun.

I have just finished watching Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s quarterly media chat, and I must confess that I am genuinely impressed by it for several compelling reasons.

To begin with, the culture of quarterly media engagement is highly commendable. It demonstrates that the governor prioritizes transparency and accountability, and more importantly, that he cares to keep the people informed about governance developments and the various projects at different stages of completion across his administration. This is a practice Governor Yahaya has consistently upheld throughout his tenure, a practice that distinguishes Gombe State from many others across Nigeria.

Where many governors carry themselves with an air of detachment and dismiss the opinions, input, and concerns of their people, Governor Inuwa has chosen a different path. He communicates with his people, informs them of developments, listens to their voices, answers their questions, and addresses their concerns. This approach reflects a fundamental understanding that governance is neither solitary nor unilateral—it is collective and collaborative. Every action of a leader must reflect the yearnings and aspirations of the people he serves.

This transparency is not merely performative. The issues discussed during the media chat were substantively matters of governance—not the political theater one might have anticipated. Many observers expected the conversation to be dominated by political positioning, boastful claims, and the kind of rhetorical posturing that has become characteristic of certain political figures in the state. Instead, the Governor provided direct, unvarnished answers. He did not resort to exploiting the platform for cheap political gain, a restraint that reflects his respect for the time and intelligence of the people of Gombe. More pointedly, he has far more substantive achievements to discuss than any political theater could accommodate.

On the critical question of the consensus candidacy arrangement, the Governor responded with characteristic clarity. He explained that consensus was simply one option explored in the selection process, detailing the deliberative steps that preceded the decision. Crucially, he reaffirmed that this approach does not diminish the rights of dissatisfied candidates; the party, he assured, is fully prepared to conduct direct primary elections if candidates choose to pursue that path. This response reveals a leader who remains focused on substantive governance, undistracted by the controversies swirling around the succession process. Governor Yahaya demonstrated the composure of a leader whose confidence rests not on the suppression of opposition, but on the strength of his record.

What particularly impressed me, however, was the Governor’s demonstrated workrate and measurable performance. It is one thing for a leader to speak of accomplishments; it is another for him to articulate the granular details of those accomplishments. Governor Yahaya did not merely mention projects, he detailed their genesis and completion status, explained their funding sources and allocated resources, and articulated the standards of quality maintained. It was evident that he possessed intimate knowledge of Gombe State’s infrastructure landscape, as though carrying a three-dimensional blueprint of the state in his mind.

The scale of his achievements is remarkable. Governor Yahaya has initiated and commissioned projects across all 11 Local Government Areas and across virtually every sector—education, healthcare, infrastructure, water resources, energy, agriculture. Yet despite this accomplishment, his appetite for further development remains undiminished. The comment read aloud during the chat, from an indigene suggesting the Governor has performed as if he has served four tenures as opposed to two, captures the popular sentiment across the state. In less than seven years, his performance has exceeded the expectations many people in Gombe had. By any objective metric, Governor Inuwa Yahaya ranks among Nigeria’s most performing governors, and he has sustained this level of delivery with consistency, rigour and humility.

One observation he articulated struck me as particularly insightful: the absence of funds is never a legitimate excuse for the absence of performance. A truly committed leader, he explained, will find innovative pathways to finance development projects. Governor Yahaya has embodied this principle. He demonstrates the characteristics of a true pragmatist—innovative, energetic, and relentlessly focused on delivering tangible, measurable benefits to the people of Gombe State. He is, fundamentally, a governor committed to actualizing the dividends of democracy for every man, woman and child in Gombe State.

Regarding his own senatorial ambitions for Gombe North, the Governor responded with striking humility. He acknowledged that he has experienced both victory and defeat in political contests, and he has endured the disappointment of unfulfilled aspirations. Yet through it all, his guiding principle has remained unchanged: “Victory from God.” He does not anchor his faith in political machinery or patronage networks. Rather, he places his trust in divine providence, believing that if it is God’s will for him to represent Gombe North in the Senate, that outcome will materialize.

Significantly, the Governor devoted considerable time to explaining why Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna was selected as the consensus gubernatorial candidate. His reasoning was substantive and strategic. He cited Gwamna’s enduring impact on the people of Gombe, his demonstrated political credibility, and, crucially, his administrative capacity to sustain and advance the development trajectory Inuwa himself has established. The Governor offered an explicit assurance: not only will Dr. Gwamna continue this legacy, but he will build upon it and achieve even greater accomplishments.

This is governance that prioritizes people over politics. This is leadership that respects the intelligence of the electorate. This is precisely the standard to which Gombe’s next governor should be held.
