Kwankwasiyya Movement urges unity ahead of 2027 elections, defends Kwankwaso-Obi talks
The group defended discussions between Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, calling for national cohesion ahead of 2027.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement has urged Nigerian politicians to embrace unity and issue-based engagement ahead of the 2027 elections, cautioning against divisive rhetoric.
In a Friday statement signed by spokesperson Habibu Sale Mohammed, the group said national cohesion should take precedence over political rivalry.
The statement responded to discussions surrounding a possible alliance between its leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Peter Obi under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) framework.
According to the group, many Nigerians have welcomed the proposed cooperation as a move toward strengthening democracy and national unity.
However, it alleged that some critics are attempting to undermine Kwankwaso through what it described as misleading commentary.
“It is unfortunate that some commentators have resorted to selective attacks and misleading narratives aimed specifically at discrediting Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso,” Mohammed said.
The movement suggested that resistance to the alliance reflects concern over its potential political impact.
“What appears to be troubling certain interests is not merely the possibility of political cooperation, but the enormous national potential such an alliance represents,” he said.
It further stated that a Kwankwaso–Obi partnership could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political direction by combining strong regional support bases.
“For the first time in recent political history, Nigerians are witnessing the realistic possibility of a broad-based political understanding capable of bridging the long-standing regional divide,” the group said.
Mohammed explained that Kwankwaso’s influence is rooted in grassroots structures in the North, while Obi has strong support among young people and urban voters in the South.
“Such cooperation introduces a new political equation that transcends ethnicity, religion, and regional sentiment,” he added.
The group also condemned what it called inconsistent standards in judging political alliances, stressing that coalition-building is a legitimate part of democracy.
It urged political actors and commentators to exercise restraint and responsibility amid ongoing national economic and security challenges.
