Musk Offers to Fund TSA Workers as Homeland Security Funding Lingers Unresolved

Amid a political standoff over US Homeland Security funding, Elon Musk offers to pay TSA employees working without pay, as long airport lines worsen nationwide.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has stepped into the US budget dispute by offering to pay the salaries of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers affected by a funding lapse at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The funding gap has left TSA employees — about 65,000 strong — working without pay since mid‑February and contributed to long security lines at airports nationwide.

“I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country,” Musk posted on X.

Estimates suggest the TSA’s annual payroll ranges from $2.5 billion to $3 billion. The agency’s parent department, DHS, is awaiting new funding because of a political standoff.

Many Democratic lawmakers are withholding DHS funding until proposed changes are made to the way U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducts enforcement raids. Their demands include curtailed patrols, a ban on ICE agents wearing face masks, and the requirement of a judicial warrant before entering private property.

The funding delay has had real effects: the DHS says more than 300 TSA workers have resigned since February 14, and unscheduled absences have surged. TSA unions report some officers are taking second jobs or relying on donations, and airports have set up food pantries and gift card drives for struggling workers.

Musk’s offer comes as political leaders negotiate funding and policy changes tied to DHS and immigration enforcement practices.
